A PARENT’S ROLE

You want that first tournament to build your child’s confidence.  Keep in mind, there are going to be nerves with this event.  If you sense anxiety, create a relaxed environment ahead of time.

Make sure your child arrives at the course about an hour before tee time.  This allows time to unwind, practice, and loosen up.  The golfer must check in at the NSJGA registration table immediately upon arrival at the course.  The player will receive their score card, rules sheet & lunch ticket at the registration table.

Parents wishing to follow their junior must register at the NSJGA registration table prior to the tournament.  If parents or spectators wish to use a golf cart they must pay the cart fee as required by each local golf course. Please present your receipt to the NSJGA staff to receive your cart assignment.

Parents (and spectators) must abide by the same dress code policy as the NSJGA members on the golf course and in the clubhouse areas if they wish to attend.

Parents are not to act as a caddy or scorekeeper for junior golfers, as Caddies are NOT allowed Violation of this rule may result in a two-stroke penalty or disqualification for the child.   Interference by spectators may result in their removal from the course at the discretion of the NSJGA staff.  A copy of the Parent/Spectator Guidelines is available at the registration table at every NSJGA event.

The NSJGA staff reserves the right to restrict a parent or a spectator from an event.

GOLF COURSE MANNERS

From tee to green –treat others as you would like to be treated.

1.         Leave the course in better condition than you found it.

            That means:

  • §Replace your divots by retrieving the displaced turf, or, if available, by placing a sand and seed mixture in the hole you made.
  • §Rake the sand smooth after playing from a bunker.
  • §Fix at least one ball mark on every green.
  • §Never throw clubs or damage the course in frustration over a missed shot

2.         Respect fellow players.

            That means:

  • §Don’t talk, or take practice swings, or stand close to another player who is about to swing.
  • §Don’t step on another player’s line (the path the ball will take on the green).
  • §Warn other players of an approaching shot by shouting “Fore!”
  • §When a fellow player is hitting, try to follow the flight of the shot so you can help find the ball if necessary.
  • §Compliment good shots; ignore bad ones.
  • §Avoid overly vocal outbursts; even celebrating can be annoying to others.

3.         Play quickly and efficiently.

            That means:

  • Be ready to hit when it is your turn.  Know the correct yardage and select the proper club well in advance.

(Note:  The player farthest away from the hole is always next to hit.  On the tee, the player who posted the lowest score on the previous hole has the “honor”.)

  • Keep pace with the group in front of you.  You are playing too slowly if the group in front is more than one hole ahead.
  • Never look for a ball for more than five minutes – three minutes if another group is waiting on the tee.

(Note:  A ball is deemed lost, under the rules, if it is not found within five minutes of the search’s beginning.)

If you believe a ball to be lost, OUTSIDE A WATER HAZARD, play a provisional ball.

  • Don’t hit until the players ahead are out of range.

What to do when lightning is near – as published by the U.S.G.A.

AVOID

  • §Open fields, including golf course
  • §Swimming pools, lakes, and seashores
  • §Railroad tracks
  • §Wire fences, overhead wires, and clotheslines
  • §Isolated trees
  • §Hilltops and open spaces
  • §Tractors and other golf course maintenance machinery
  • §Golf carts or any open vehicles

SEEK

  • §Buildings protected against lightning
  • §Large metal-framed buildings
  • §Large unprotected buildings
  • §Automobiles with metal tops and bodies
  • §Trailers with metal bodies

WHEN ONE OF THE ABOVE IS NOT AVAILABLE, SEEK

  • §Dense woods, not isolated trees
  • §Low lying areas, not hilltops or high places
  • §Small unprotected buildings, tents or shelters in low-lying places

*  Raising golf clubs or umbrellas above the head increases the risk when lightning is near.

* The NSJGA emphasizes that all players should be aware that they have the right to stop play if they think lightning threatens them, even though the committee may not have specifically authorized it by signal as indicated in the U.S.G.A. Rules 6-8 and 33-2d.

The NSJGA generally uses the following signals:

  • To discontinue play: One (1) prolonged note of a siren, repeated
  • To resume play: Three (3) consecutive notes of a siren, repeated

NORTH SUNCOAST JUNIOR GOLF ASSOCIATION

PROCEDURE FOR BREAKING TIES

18 HOLES – Match cards for last 9 holes played.  If the tying players have the same score for the last nine holes, the winner will be determined on the basis of the last six holes.  If the last six holes are tied, then the score of the first three holes will determine the winner.  If the tie cannot be settled this way – the Number 1 handicap hole will be used.

12 HOLES – The total of the last six holes will be used.  If this does not determine a winner, the last four holes will be counted.  If this does not determine a winner, the last two holes will be counted.  If this does not determine a winner, the Number 1 handicap hole will be used.

9 HOLES – The total of the last six holes will be used.  If this does not determine a winner, the last three holes will be counted.  If this does not determine a winner, the Number 1 handicap hole will be used.

LESS THAN 9 HOLES – Last two holes will determine the winner of the tied match.  If this does not determine a winner, the first two holes will be used.  If this does not produce a winner, the lowest handicap hole applicable will be used.

If it is IMPOSSIBLE to break a tie, a blind draw of the cards will take place.

NOTE:   The Tie-Break procedures noted on any Local Rules Sheet will supersede this general Procedure for Breaking Ties.

Guidelines for NSJGA Parents/Spectators

Parents/spectators are required to stay on the cart paths.  In the absence of cart paths, we ask that parents/spectators stay in the rough.

Please stay off fairways, tees, and greens.

Parents/spectators may not interact with participants and should remain at least 25 yards away from the competitors they are following

The NSJGA recommend that all parents/spectators stay one shot ahead of the group they are watching. This allows spectators to follow errant shots and help identify where the golf ball comes to rest.

Parents/spectators should not interfere with any group advancing from behind, nor should they converse with any competitor.

Cell phones allowed for Emergency purposes only.

General cell phone use will NOT be allowed anywhere on the golf course.

Please remember to turn your phone to silent.

Parents/spectators CAN do the following:

*    Walk on the cart path and watch your child play golf
*    Carry an umbrella, food, drink, medicine, etc. for your child.  If the competitor needs any of the following these can be       obtained BETWEEN play of holes, not during play
*    Help your child and other players search for a golf ball

The following actions are UNACCEPTABLE from a parent/spectator:
*    Verbally abusing or belittling players for any reason
*    Yelling and/or cursing at players/officials/golf course staff
*    Hand signals/gestures (These are considered advice!)
*    Interfering with players/officials/golf course staff while in the scoring area
*    Giving rulings to juniors on the golf course (too often the information is incorrect)
*    Interfering with any player’s opportunity to compete fairly and fun while playing the game of golf

Allowing spectators at NSJGA events is a privilege.

Failure to abide by the above guidelines will result in loss of privileges.

Dress Code For Juniors And Parents/Spectators

All NSJGA players, parents, and spectators will be required to wear proper golfing attire at all tournaments.  Collared shirts are required at all clubhouses or on the course.

No T-shirts, cut off shorts, jeans, jean shorts or tank tops including spaghetti strapped, will be permitted. Juniors are required to wear spikeless golf shoes or sneakers.   Other types of athletic shoes will not be permitted (i.e. baseball/soccer/football, etc.).
